Is Sport Specialization Good for Young Athletes?

A smart trend or dangerous practice?

One it comes to developing sport skills and improving performance with young athletes, thinking has changed over the last 20 years.

In the past, athletes were encouraged to play different sports over the year to round out skills, have fun and take a break from their main sport.

But in the last 20 years, there’s been a growing trend for parents and coaches to focus on a single sport all year long. The idea is that by devoting all time, energy and effort around improving one sport, the athlete will be a tier player.

Sounds good in theory, but does the research support that? And what perspective to our doctors have at Head 2 Toe. They treat youth athletes every week and share some valuable insights on the main dangers of specialization.
